Your first day in the United Kingdom is a milestone moment โ the beginning of a new chapter. It can also feel disorienting, exhausting, and overwhelming. This guide is designed to prepare you for exactly what to expect, hour by hour, so that you can arrive with confidence.
At the Airport: Immigration Control
After your flight lands, you will proceed to UK Border Force passport control. The queue for non-EU passengers can be long, especially at Heathrow's Terminal 2, 3, or 5. Allow 30โ90 minutes for this process.
Have the following ready before you reach the desk:
- Your valid passport, open to your visa page (or with your BRP collection details)
- Your CAS reference number (for students)
- Your accommodation address for your first night
- Return or onward travel evidence if requested
The border officer may ask simple questions: why you are coming to the UK, where you will be living, how long your course or employment lasts. Answer briefly and factually. If you are asked a question you don't understand, it is perfectly acceptable to ask the officer to repeat it.
๐ก Tip: If you have any concerns at the border โ if you are detained for additional questioning โ stay calm, be polite, and ask if you may contact someone. This is your right. Do not sign any documents you do not understand.
Collecting Baggage and Exiting the Terminal
Once through passport control, collect your bags from the baggage carousel. Your flight number will display on the screens. If your luggage is damaged or lost, report it at the airline's lost luggage desk before leaving the baggage hall.
From arrivals, you have several transport options:
- Pre-booked transfer: If Indian Occean Limited has coordinated your airport pickup, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board.
- Heathrow Express: Fastest rail link to Paddington (15 minutes) โ expensive but very convenient with heavy luggage.
- Elizabeth Line / Underground: Cheaper, but can be difficult with large suitcases during peak hours.
- Licensed black cabs: Available from the taxi rank outside arrivals. Metered, reliable, and able to take luggage โ but expensive for longer journeys.
- National Express coaches: Budget option to major cities, departs from airport bus stations.
Getting Your First UK SIM Card
Picking up a UK SIM card early is one of the first things you should do. Many airports have WHSmith, Boots, or network stores airside and in arrivals. Three, EE, O2, and Vodafone all offer pay-as-you-go SIMs often free of charge โ you simply top them up.
Alternatively, eSIM options from providers like Airalo or your home network's roaming plan can bridge the gap until you purchase a UK SIM.
Arriving at Your Accommodation
Whether you are checking into university halls, a private flat, or a hotel for your first night, have your booking confirmation accessible on your phone (downloaded, not just in your email, in case you have no data yet).
On arrival at your accommodation:
- Take photos of every room before unpacking โ document any pre-existing damage
- Locate the boiler, fuse box, and stop-tap for water (in case of emergencies)
- Check that your keys work and any security fobs are functioning
- Note the postcode of your address โ you will need this for registering with the GP and bank
Connecting to the UK
If your accommodation does not have broadband set up yet, your first task is getting online. UK supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda) are a great source of affordable SIM cards, basic household items, and food โ and they are usually accessible by public transport within a short distance.
Major UK supermarkets are typically open until 10pm or midnight on weekdays. Smaller convenience stores and petrol stations are often 24 hours.
The Evening: Rest and Reorient
Do not try to do everything on your first day. After a long flight, your priority is food, rest, and getting yourself oriented. Order a takeaway, explore your immediate neighbourhood, and make a list of what you need to do in the next 48 hours.
๐ก Tip: Download the following apps on your first day: Citymapper (for UK city navigation), Deliveroo or Just Eat (food delivery), Monzo or Revolut (banking), and the NHS App (for GP registration and health records).
